Abstract / Other ......

Creating 'arty smarty me ..' has enabled Jo to do something very different; move her paintings ‘fast track’ into

peoples work and living spaces, gets her name known, but most importantly it keeps her painting!

Biography Note (2008/2009);-

joseVi lives with her family in Poole, and paints fulltime.

Actually that’s not true; she mostly stumbles about the house in a sleepy haze (due to her insomniac children) getting distracted by house work &

a super soft cocker spaniel that thinks its a baby!   She eats as much chocolate as possible (boosts energy levels!), chats with the neighbours

over the back wall, whilst her 2 young children hang of her legs fighting for cuddles, or just FIGHT!!!

Alternatively, she spends hours flitting back and forth between painting base coats on canvases and surfing the internet or checking her email when

the siblings are momentarily entertained… The rare occasions she wakes up with her ‘efficient head’ on she gets the kids engrossed in some activity

WITH food and water! And organises her washing into tidy piles for LATER…   Only then, finally, she starts painting her next masterpiece!

5th August 1975, Jose was born into this world as Josephine Adams. She was the youngest daughter of 4 children growing up in an old coach house

in Ossemsley; a country estate in the heart of the New Forest.   Here she lived the most idyllic childhood, roaming the fields as free as a bird, making

funny clay things in the streams, jumping of haystacks, flying about on her New Forest pony ‘Conker‘, constantly exploring new spaces, dancing, and

generally getting mucky!

Art had an affinity with Jo and came naturally to her. She was a dreamy child and a doodler! She doodled constantly but was in such a dream world she

didn’t realise she was doing it! She was also sensitive and doodling / painting made her feel happier; it was relaxing and she could lose herself in

it for hours. When she finally emerged from her dream state everything that was trivial in the world was trivial once more! Mentally, art put her back

on an even plane; seeing things as they really were, not what she dreamed them to be! From her earliest days Jo has always needed her time to

paint and just to ‘be‘..

On leaving school she applied to art colleges and was accepted at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design. She spent between 1992 - 1997

(including a year out working in Brussels in 1994) loving every minute. She worked part-time in term time and used the holidays to travel. The summer

of 1996 she travelled around America and Canada back-packing and took her sketchbook with her everywhere doodling her memories / sights. It

was her diary! She came out of college with an ND & HND in Spatial Design. Then, struggling to find work in her home town she began working

as an administrator in offices (to pay the rent!) and continued painting in her own time, often to orders requested by friends / family (portraits and

such like). She started teaching life drawing for a private studio in the forest in 1999 and continued to take in a steady flow of commissions, signing

her work ‘J. Adams’ .

In 2004 Jose married and became Josephine Vivian. She was expecting her first child imminently but she was also starting a new job teaching

Art for Brockenhurst College (Adult Education). She was going on maternity leave from one job and starting another 2! The job and baby scenario

worked out well. That is until she fell pregnant with her second child just 9 months later! She intended to keep teaching. She was now taking on

more private lessons, large commissions, exhibiting, and organising art workshops for watercolour enthusiasts; and continued up to the birth. She

was at her peak, enjoying every moment and had become close to her students.

She returned to work for the summer term (2006) as promised and her new child was only 7 weeks old. She struggled juggling both babies,

preparing work for her classes, with childcare, and actually just getting out of the front door most days.

Something had to give; so the teaching stopped...

Now, Jose uses her painting as a very powerful tool. If she is having a bad day, week, or even year! she paints, and as always life’s

ok again…    When life is good she also paints; making it even better! She throws all her energy into her work and in doing so she

paints with pure emotion.   She does not think about the end product, just loves how liberated she feels when she is doing it. Her

paintings are mostly acrylic on canvas and her brushwork is natural, loose and vivid; in a recent review her style was likened to the

French impressionists of the late 19th century.
